LONDON — A British submarine came close to disaster in 1983 when an inexperienced seaman opened the wrong valve and the vessel temporarily went out of control, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Mail on Sunday said the 7,500-ton Repulse, with 16 U.S. Polaris nuclear missiles aboard, crash-dived toward the seabed at an angle of 35 degrees.
The report said that only a few feet from the bottom, the captain and helmsmen succeeded in bringing the submarine out of the dive.
