Sri Lankan army troops, battling Tamil separatist guerrillas, shot and killed a Roman Catholic priest and eight other people near the northern town of Mannar, two bishops charged. The bishops said Father Mary Bastion and two teen-age boys were shot inside a church at Vankalai on Saturday by troops who broke open the church door. Government officials denied that a priest was killed but confirmed the killing of eight Tamils, whom they described as terrorists.
