Southland Sailing : Ficker Cup Races Postponed by Calm

Eight crews seeking the Bill Ficker Cup and a berth in this year’s Congressional Cup will have to wait another week for a final decision.

Three days of flat calms off the Long Beach breakwater resulted in only four of the scheduled matches being completed. Two races were sailed in light airs Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday there wasn’t enough wind to start.

Long Beach Yacht Club race officials said three races will be sailed next weekend.

Leading in the win-loss column after four races was Jack Gobbell of Huntington Harbor Yacht Club, last year’s Ficker Cup winner. Gobbell is a perfect 4-0. Others are Mike Elias, Voyagers YC, 3-1; Jeff Madrigali, San Francisco YC, 3-1; Mark Gaudio, Bahia Corinthian YC, 2-2; Bill Huber, Shoreline YC, 2-2; Dave Klatt, Anacapa YC, 1-3; Rick Briggs, Seal Beach YC, 1-3; Ken Seider, Newport Harbor YC, 0-4.
