Computer maker Convergent Technologies Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., said Monday that it hired veteran Hewlett-Packard Co. executive Paul Ely Jr. as president and chief executive. Allen H. Michels, Convergent co-founder and former chief executive, remains chairman, but former President Ben Wegbreit, 39, another founder, will become executive vice president.

Analysts said Ely, who was executive vice president and had headed Hewlett-Packard’s computer operations since 1973, might provide stability for Convergent Technologies, which has been plagued by management turnover, including a major reorganization in July . The firm lost $1.9 million in the first nine months of 1984 versus a profit of $11 million in the year-earlier period.

Ely, who didn’t move up in last year’s Hewlett-Packard reorganization, gets a $1-million bonus from Convergent, another $1.6-million potential bonus and stock options in addition to a $300,000 annual salary in his new job.

Hewlett-Packard, meanwhile, Monday announced a reorganization of the analytical, components, medical and technology unit formerly headed by Ely. A new unit, the manufacturing, medical and analytical systems sector, will be headed by Lewis E. Platt, vice president and general manager of the manufacturing systems group. Executive Vice President William E. Terry, head of the measurement and design-systems sector, will now oversee the components group and corporate engineering department.

Hewlett-Packard also said that Ely’s posts on the board and executive committee will not be immediately filled.
