More Sobriety Checks Planned

Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block said Monday that the sobriety checkpoint set up by his department at Valinda last Saturday was so successful that others will follow--depending on how much money the county Board of Supervisors will allocate to the program.

Block said that although no formal evaluation has been completed, he considers the checkpoint a success because it ran smoothly, netted some alleged drinking drivers and did not cause complaints from residents in the area.

The roadblock was set up at 10 p.m. Saturday at Francisquito Avenue and Hacienda Boulevard.

During that time, the Sheriff’s Department said, 302 vehicles were stopped, six drivers were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and one person was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication.

About 20 sheriff’s deputies manned the checkpoint. Block said this cost from $3,000 to $3,500--mostly for overtime paid to the officers.
