DeLorean, Victim of the System?

Share

Moran’s article correctly points out that DeLorean is a victim of our criminal system. DeLorean spent days in prison and months in court, and incurred a substantial amount of attorneys’ fees, all because a handful of government agents decided to catch DeLorean, at the taxpayers’ expense, in their net.

There is no doubt, as Moran points out, that statutes should be enacted to compensate victims who suffer from our criminal system as DeLorean has.

But more needs to be done to protect each of us against future abuses. Prosecutors are not subject to checks and balances. The DeLorean prosecutors and investigators are still on the government payroll.

A special prosecutor’s office, independent of the Executive Branch, must be established to investigate and prosecute those government agents who have abused their office. The establishment of such an office would greatly discourage arrest and prosecution as a means of punishment and harassment, and safeguard the civil liberties of our people.
