The Manhattan district attorney’s office, saying it is still gathering evidence, today was given until Jan. 16 to prepare its case against Bernhard Goetz, who is accused of shooting four teen-agers in a subway car.

Goetz was to be arraigned today on four counts of attempted murder, but Assistant Dist. Atty. Susan Braver told Criminal Court Judge Jay Gold that “additional evidence is being brought before us” and much of the case is pending.

Goetz, who smiled during the minute-long proceeding but said nothing, had refused offers from strangers to post his $50,000 bail and today paid it himself with a cashier’s check.
