Sulfuric acid gas leaking from a frozen pipe at a chemical plant injured 20 people and forced 300 to evacuate their homes before a breeze dispersed the cloud, officials said today.

Evacuees returned to their homes near Bofors’ Nobel Works after spending the night at schools, officials said. Schools and offices remained closed for the day, however.

“The gas cloud has now mostly disappeared, and people can leave their houses,” a Bofors spokesman said.

Officials said the gas leaked from a frozen pipe that ruptured during a power outage at the plant in the city of 36,000, located 150 miles west of Stockholm.
