Guatemala, Britain Will Discuss Belize
Guatemala and Britain will renew talks next month over Guatemalan claims to Belize, Deputy Foreign Minister Mario Marroquin said Friday.
Marroquin said representatives of both countries will meet in New York in February with representatives of the newly elected Belizean government as observers, Marroquin said.
He said the two countries will “make their points of view known” on the issue of Belize, which gained independence from Britain in 1981.
Guatemala has claimed Belize, wedged between Mexico and Guatemala, as its own territory for 122 years.
Guatemala severed consular relations with Britain and sealed the border when London granted independence to Belize, a colony between 1862 and 1981.
