Navratilova Easily Beats Bassett, 6-1, 6-1
Top-seeded Martina Navratilova and fourth-seeded Manuela Maleeva both won second-round matches Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Washington tennis tournament.
Navratilova, the top-ranked women’s player in the world, easily defeated Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-1, 6-1. Bassett, ranked 10th, started the match by losing her serve at love and was broken three times in the first set.
Vying for her 100th career singles championship, Navratilova, will be pitted against Helena Sukova in today’s quarterfinals. Last month, Sukova ended Navratilova’s 74-match winning streak with a three-set victory at the Australian Open.
Maleeva, ranked No. 6 in the world, overcame a second-set lapse to register a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 triumph over Camille Benjamin of Bakersfield, Calif.
