Ground-breaking ceremonies for a 550-unit housing project on the grounds of Fairview State Hospital are scheduled for Jan. 23.

Plans call for the $22-million Fairview Community Housing Project to contain one-, two- and three-bedroom rental units.

The first units are expected to be ready for tenants by summer, and another 148 units are scheduled for completion by the fall.

Primarily, the rental units are intended for hospital employees, but developmentally disabled people and Fairview clients who qualify for affordable housing will be considered.

Fairview State Hospital has pushed for the project to aid in recruiting and retaining employees, hospital officials said. The hospital has had difficulties because of a lack of affordable units in and around Costa Mesa.

The housing project will be built and managed by the Fairview Management Co., a private development group that has a 55-year lease on 60 acres at the hospital.

The project has been in the works since 1977.
