Two Cease-Fire Observers Slain
Gunmen ambushed a jeep carrying two French cease-fire observers through Beirut’s southern suburbs today, killing both men. It was the second fatal attack on the force in a week, police said.
Witnesses in the Shia Muslim suburb of Borj al Barajneh said gunmen rained fire on the jeep from a nearby building, hitting both victims in the head and abdomen and killing then instantly.
A spokesman for the French observer force identified the two as chief adjutants Patrice Grecourt, 34, and Henri Perrot, 35, and said their bodies would be flown to France after ceremonies in Lebanon.
On Jan.7, the deputy commander of the 67-man French observer force in Lebanon was killed as he left the French ambassador’s residence in West Beirut.
In southern Lebanon, guerrillas armored patrol passed. One hour later, as Israeli reinforcements arrived at the scene of the blast, another bomb exploded, Beirut radio said.
Israeli military sources said a Beirut radio report that 45 Israeli soldiers were “killed or wounded” was exaggerated, but they gave no casualty figures of their own.
