Mayor Dianne Feinstein vetoed a resolution passed by the Board of Supervisors that opposes San Francisco as home port of the renovated battleship Missouri. Feinstein said she vetoed the resolution because it would “tell the United States Navy that naval vessels, their sailors aboard, and their families ashore are unwelcome in San Francisco.” She added that rejecting the Missouri could cost the local economy $130 million a year in Navy money and up to 2,000 jobs. The mayor attributed the supervisors’ vote to the “nuclear freeze movement,” which she says wants to make San Francisco a symbol.
