South Africa rejected a request by black leader Jesse Jackson to visit the country next month. South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Bernardus G. Fourie, wrote Jackson that a February visit is “not opportune for the South African government” but said a future request would be considered “in the light of prevailing circumstances.” South Africa had granted Jackson a visa for the first half of January, but Jackson asked for a new visa so that he could attend the installation of Desmond Tutu as bishop of Johannesburg on Feb. 3.
