Town officials in Lamu are studying a plan for residents to dress donkeys in diapers because sanitation crews cannot keep up with the amount of manure littering the streets, the Kenya News Agency said Monday.

The donkey diaper idea was raised during a stormy town meeting Sunday in Lamu, which is on a small island 500 miles northeast of Nairobi. The meeting was called to discuss ways to keep the town clean after an outbreak of cholera in the region, the news agency said.

Town officials said the donkey diaper idea must await final approval from senior governemnt authorities on the mainland before it is instituted.
