Letters : Al Martinez Columns

Share

A letter to the editor recently asked where The Times got Al Martinez.

I am more concerned that The Times will be able to keep him. What a writer! What a guy!

I crow with delight over every one of his columns--witty, insightful, mordant, wonderful.

Whoever you are, don’t let him go--whoever he is. Someone finally and at long last to open the paper for.

I get such a kick out of the outrage that Al Martinez constantly manages to generate from our Chatsworth and San Fernando Valley public out there.

Personally, I find his articles to be ironic tongue-in-cheek wit, not to be taken literally or at face value . . . much in the style of Mike Royko in Chicago, whom I’ve enjoyed for years!

No matter what topic Al Martinez is discussing, I just laugh my head off at the manner in which he “tears it apart,” still managing to get a subtle point across. And I don’t believe that he is against women or anyone else! I’ll bet he is a real sweetheart in his everyday life, and being diabolically clever in print is exactly why he’s in the job he’s in! Outrage sells newspapers too. Besides, I think he’s funny.

What is the matter with those women who write in complaining of Al Martinez and his column? Where is their sense of humor? Don’t they realize that much of his stuff is “tongue in cheek”?

I look forward to his articles. I think he is talented, very clever and humorous, in spite of the fact that we are in opposite political camps.

Write on, Al!
