Twenty-two alleged members of a radical Trotskyite group were arrested in various parts of Egypt on Monday night on charges of subversion and inciting riots, Interior Ministry officials said Tuesday.

Another 25 suspected members, mostly workers and students, have been arrested over the last two weeks, while eight remain at large, the officials said. They said leaflets inciting violence and prescribing methods of “armed struggle” were found.

The officials said investigations showed that the group was involved in recent riots in the industrial town of Kafr el Dawar, where workers clashed with police in protests over high prices, and in university demonstrations in Cairo in November.
