Dr. Milton Zucker and his wife, Natalie, of Pico Rivera have donated $10,000 to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood that will be used to help establish a child-care facility at the center.

Milton Zucker practiced urology at St. Francis from 1946 to 1983. He was hospital chief of staff in 1953. His wife is a clinical psychologist.

The child-care center is slated to open in mid-year and will be available to residents of the community and employees of the medical center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Gilbert Herrera of Lakewood and Gary Ellis of Bellflower received certificates of appreciation from the City of Bellflower for saving the life of a man whose motorcycle caught fire after a traffic accident in November. Ellis extinguished the flames while Herrera moved the victim to safety. Both were honored at a meeting last month of the Bellflower City Council.

Don and Shirley Robertson of Whittier, who have cared for more than 30 foster children in the last six years, were named the city’s Citizens of the Month for December.

The Robertsons have one daughter, have adopted another and are in the process of adopting 9-month-old twins, a boy and a girl. They usually care for children age 5 or younger, many of whom have been abused or molested and have serious health problems.

“These kids need security and stability, which most of them never had before,” Shirley Robertson said. “Some of them are frightened to even leave the house. Words cannot describe the heartbreak we have seen in these children over the years.”

Foster parenting has great rewards, Don Robertson said. “You watch their personalities develop,” he said, “and you try to raise them, teach them right and wrong, like your own kids.”

Citizens of the Month are nominated by fellow Whittier residents and honored by a program sponsored by the city’s Human Services Department and the local McDonald’s restaurant.

Lukman Glasgow, executive director of the Downey Museum of Art, has resigned to take a post as arts grant administrator of the California Arts Council’s Artist in Residency Program.

Glasgow, a recognized ceramic artist, has been executive director of the museum for five years. Noll Thompson will act as interim director until a new executive director is appointed.

David Murphy of Whittier has been nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy by Rep. David Dreier (R-La Verne). He will compete with other nominees from across the country for the 1,400 appointments to the academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Two vacancies on the Southeast Regional Occupational Program Governing Board have been filled by Betty Coogan, an assistant superintendent in the Norwalk-La Mirada school district, and Dianne Xitco, an ABC Unified School District trustee.

Dr. Kenneth Bell of Long Beach has been reelected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Bell is chief of obstetrics and gynecology for Kaiser Permanente’s Orange County area.

Charles L. Lee of Cerritos has been appointed by the Cerritos City Council to the city’s Property Maintenance Appeals Board. The board tries to prevent substandard buildings and property in the city.

Longtime Whittier residents Monte Wicker and Carl Fricke Jr. were presented “Good Scout” awards for their contributions to scouting at a Friendly Hills Country Club dinner sponsored by the Rio Hondo District of the Boy Scouts of America.

Kathie Arscott has been elected president of the Montebello Chapter of the California Council for Adult Education, which promotes adult education in California.

Barbara Nix, past president of the Whittier District Board of Realtors and a director of the California Assn. of Realtors, was named Realtor of the Year by the district board for her service to organized real estate and participation in civic affairs.
