Presidential aide Michael Deaver is suffering from a possible kidney malfunction, friends said today. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said Deaver is in stable condition at Georgetown Hospital and is undergoing further tests.

“His spirits are good,” Speakes said. He said Deaver’s condition is improving and that he had done some work Wednesday from his hospital room.

Deaver, 46, checked into the hospital Sunday after attending the swearing-in ceremonies for President Reagan. He had been home for several days with “flu-like symptoms.” Friends said he is suffering from a kidney malfunction.
