Environmentalists and public officials Thursday announced creation of a private effort to study problems stemming from groundwater pollution and recommend methods of cleaning up contaminated water supplies.

The National Groundwater Policy Forum, sponsored by the Conservation Foundation and headed by Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt, expects to make recommendations early in 1986.

“Authorities have closed thousands of wells serving millions of people because of pollution,” Babbitt told a news conference.
