Legal Fund Can Use NAACP as Part of Name
The U.S. Court of Appeals here ruled Friday that the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund Inc. can use the initials of the civil rights organization.
The three-member panel, in an opinion written by David L. Bazelon, said the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People waited too long to press its claim that its former legal arm should not be permitted to use the initials NAACP.
The NAACP asked the legal fund to change its name in 1966, but the group refused. The NAACP did not formally vote to end permission for the legal group to use its initials until 1979.
