Westminster school board has set a public hearing on the recommended closure of the John F. Land School for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school’s multipurpose room, 15151 Temple St.

A committee formed to evaluate the need for schools in view of declining enrollments recommended closing Land and two other schools, Virginia K. Boos and Ada E. Clegg.

The Land school, which has kindergarten through sixth grades, is the newest in the Westminster School District. It has a large minority enrollment and one of the highest academic ratings in the district, said Cindi Arthur, a spokeswoman for the Committee for Land School, which is working to keep the school open.

Bill Lawson, assistant superintendent, said the student body has declined in number each year since 1977-78, year when Land had 433 pupils. As of last Monday, enrollment was 256, he said.
