Somma Mattress Co. Finds New L.A. Headquarters

Los angeles-based Somma Mattress co., has acquired an $8-million, 16 acre facility from Continental Can Co. at Southern Pacific and Indiana streets for its new headquarters and manufacturing center for regional, national and worldwide operations as a major supplier.

The 540,000-square-foot, one-story structure is the largest single facility in the nation for mattress production, according to Angie Echevarria, president. It will consolidate the firm’s currently dispersed offices and manufacturing plants, he said, with office personnel moving in now and the phasing in of manufacturing operations early in February.

The East Los Angeles site was found with the aid of a task force appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley, Echevarria said, when the manufacturer was faced with the possibility of having to leave the city because of insufficient space to accommodate the firm.
