Soccer Player Stabbed During Melee

A 24-year-old Costa Mesa soccer player was stabbed in the chest during a melee that erupted between two teams of players Sunday, Costa Mesa police said.

The victim, Jesus Canberos Robio, was in stable condition Sunday night at the Costa Medical Center Hospital.

Sgt. Rod Haddock said Robio was stabbed by an unidentified man about 1 p.m. as fights broke out between the opposing teams playing on a field at Sonora School, 966 Sonora Road.

Haddock said it was unknown if the assailant, who escaped, was a member of the soccer team or a bystander who got involved in the fight.
