Jery Ancell has been named superintendent of the 960-student Alpine Union School District, a board member said Sunday.

Ancell, formerly assistant superintendent of educational services in the Santee School District, was chosen from a field of 97 applicants for his “excellent credentials in curriculum,” said Alpine Board of Education member George (Jody) Root.

Ancell officially replaces Alpine Supt. Andrew Schmidt, who left the two-school district to become chief of schools in Ojai.

Geoff Teall, who applied for the post but was not chosen, has served as interim superintendent since Schmidt’s departure in November.

Root said Ancell will begin his new job Feb. 11 and will be paid an annual salary of about $48,000. The new superintendent had worked in various positions in the Santee district for 15 years.
