Wintry weather hit the Plains as far south as Texas with snow and a mixture of rain and sleet that made travel a hazard from Illinois and Indiana to Oklahoma and Arkansas. Temperatures dipped into the teens along the Southeast coast and tumbled into the 20s in northern Florida. Asheville, N.C., set a record with a low of 7 and Savannah, Ga., had a record 17. There was light snow across the Great Lakes region and central New England.
