Chile’s Ambassador to OAS Quits Post
Chile’s ambassador to the Organization of American States has resigned, shortly after published reports quoted her as criticizing policies of Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s government, officials said Tuesday. Other sources said she was forced to resign.
Monica Madariaga--a distant cousin of Pinochet who was described by Latin American diplomats as personally close to the president during eight years as a member of his Cabinet--said in a telephone interview that she informed the OAS of her resignation Monday.
Madariaga declined to say why she resigned or to comment on the political situation in Chile, which has been under a state of siege since Nov. 6.
In a recent interview with the Chilean magazine Que Pasa, Madariaga called on the Pinochet government to make a strong effort to reconcile its differences with opposition political forces.
