THE CURRENT HITS

The “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” videocassette debuted at No. 21 on the Billboard magazine sales chart. This follows the incredibly successful single of the same title, recorded by an all-star singing group in London under the guidance of rock star Bob Geldof. The proceeds from both single and videocassette--bargain-priced at $9.95--benefit the victims of the African famine.

BITS: “Madonna,” the video featuring disco diva Madonna, didn’t do very well its second week, plunging from No. 20 to No. 33. . . . Talk about monopoly. Jane Fonda has three videocassettes in the Top 10: “Workout” (No. 2), “Prime Time” (No. 5) and “Workout Challenge” (No. 9). . . . “Tightrope,” the Clint Eastwood thriller expected to be a big hit, is a relatively slow starter, moving up to No. 15 in its second week. . . . Debuts: “Cloak and Dagger” (No. 23), “The Song Remains the Same” (No. 26) and the David Bowie video “Jazzin’ for Blue Jean” (No. 28).

RENTALS: Last week’s debuts are this week’s hot items. Jumping into the Top 10 in their second chart week are “Tightrope” (No. 5), “Best Defense” (No. 6) and “Cloak and Dagger” (No. 8). . . . Lots of debuts this week: the Debra Winger drama, “Mike’s Murder” (No. 25), and three oldies--”2001: A Space Odyssey” (No. 28), “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (No. 31) and “The Trouble With Harry” (No. 34). “Harry,” released in 1955, is part of Universal’s successful Alfred Hitchcock classics series.
