Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a disease that has reached near-epidemic proportions among homosexual men in recent years, is the topic of a stage play this weekend at San Diego State University’s Experimental Theater.

“Artists Involved With Death and Survival,” a 24-scene play representing the work of 13 gay and lesbian writers, will be performed at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

“The intention of the project was to educate and empower audiences,” according to Leland Moss, the play’s director.

Performances will be followed by a discussion period during which the audience may question performers and health professionals about the production and about AIDS.

The production is sponsored by SDSU’s Gay and Lesbian Student Union, with assistance from the Student Health Advisory Board, the Graduate Social Work Assn., the SDSU Drama Department and the San Diego AIDS Project. Saturday evening’s performance will be a benefit for the San Diego AIDS Project.

Tickets are $7 for general admission, $5.50 for senior citizens and students from other schools, and $5 for SDSU students.
