Government Asks High Court to Allow Deportation of 2,700 Cuban Refugees
The government Thursday asked the Supreme Court to allow about 2,700 undesirable Cuban refugees, including 1,487 held at Atlanta’s Federal Penitentiary, to be deported to their homeland.
Justice Department attorneys, responding to a plea to delay the deportation, filed a 15-page document supporting the return of the undesirable Cubans who came to America in the 1981 Mariel boatlift. Most of the imprisoned refugees are mentally ill or have criminal records.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they begin deportation next Friday,” Dale Schwartz, attorney for the refugees, said. The Administration “has wanted to get rid of these people all along,” he added.
There was no indication when the court would rule on the case.
