The general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Hu Yaobang, will visit Australia in April, Prime Minister Bob Hawke said Friday.

Hawke said Hu’s good-will visit will be an important event in the relationship between Australia and China, enabling a continuation of broad ranging discussions which he had with Chinese leaders during his visit to China last year.

“I expect our formal discussions to focus on key issues in the international situation, as well as on the bilateral relationship, in particular, areas of joint economic interest,” Hawke said.

“The issues of regional security, disarmament and arms control, and East-West relations can be expected to figure prominently.”

Hu will be accompanied by a member of the Chinese Communist Party secretariat, Hu Qili, and other party and government officials.
