Viren Out of Today’s Long Beach Marathon

An ankle injury will keep Finnish Olympian Lasse Viren from competing in today’s Long Beach Marathon, which is expected to draw about 4,000 runners. Viren, the four-time gold medal winner, had scheduled the race as the first in his comeback attempt.

Late last year, Viren announced he was coming out of retirement to train for the marathon. He was expected to live and train in the Malibu area. Viren sprained his ankle while training and remained in Finland, race organizers said.

The marathon is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. at the Long Beach Convention Center.
