Cotton and rice cash subsidies will hit $1 billion for 1984.
The subsidies, called “deficiency payments,” are provided by law to help make up for lower prices when the crops are marketed. Farmers who participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s acreage programs are eligible. For 1983, cotton farmers got about $430 million in deficiency payments and rice producer about $250 million.
