California's oil production set a record in 1984.

Oil companies pumped an estimated 412 million barrels, up 1.7% from the previous year, the state Department of Conservation reported. The preliminary figures showed an increase of 5.2 million barrels from onshore fields and 1.6 million from state and federal offshore fields, the department said. The sharpest increase was from fields in Kern County. Natural gas production totaled 485 billion cubic feet, a 16% increase.
