My first reaction to your article (Jan. 7), “Life Bustles Below Streets of Toronto,” was a shiver! Not at the thought of the bright sunshine-filled days Toronto receives in the winter (which you failed to mention), but at the idea (which you belabored) that the cold that accompanies a typical winter day sends Torontonians rushing en masse into tunnels. Not quite. Not even close to factual.

It’s true Toronto has a very sophisticated underground footway that helps connect people in all areas of the city with the downtown core--that same safe, clean, heart of the city that Toronto is world famous for. And it’s handy to have the footway here. One or two days a winter, when there is a real storm raging, I use it myself. Otherwise I walk above ground or drive, as do the vast majority of Torontonians. We do this so we can enjoy Toronto’s crisp, clear, beautiful winter days.
