An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile was destroyed over the Pacific when an unexplained problem was detected soon after it was launched on a test flight from Vandenberg Air Force Base. An Air Force spokesman said parts of the missile fell harmlessly into the ocean. The rocket was launched at 5:18 a.m. and was headed for a target 4,100 miles away at Kwajalein Atoll when it was destroyed.
