Dils Decides to Remain With the Rams

Steve Dils, the free-agent quarterback who considered signing with the Portland Breakers of the United States Football League, said Tuesday he has agreed to re-sign with the Rams.

“It was a very difficult decision,” Dils said Wednesday. “As late as Saturday, I was leaning to Portland.”

Dils, who played at Stanford, grew up across the Columbia River from Portland in Vancouver, Wash.

He said he would sign a two-year contract with the Rams, with whom he earned about $150,000 as a back-up last season.

“I came out with quite a bit more money,” he said.

Dils was traded to the Rams by Minnesota in the third week of last season and played behind Jeff Kemp.

“The Breakers made me what they felt was their best offer,” Dils said. “It wasn’t that Portland didn’t offer enough money. It was partly that, but that was not the main reason.”

He said he turned down the Breakers mainly because the Rams told him he will have a chance to win the starting job.
