Pacific Pallisades : YMCA Wins Option to Buy Canyon Site

Share

In an out-of-court settlement, the Palisades-Malibu YMCA has won an option to purchase three acres of property in lower Temescal Canyon from the Presbyterian Conference Grounds.

The agreement ends a 5-year-old legal dispute in which the YMCA claimed that the Presbyterian Synod of Southern California and Hawaii breached a sale option contract. The YMCA has agreed to drop its lawsuit in exchange for the right to buy a new parcel for $300,000 within three years.

The 20-year-old YMCA facility at 821 Via de la Paz is crowded and officials planned to build a new complex in the canyon. But the project, proposed in 1978, met stiff community opposition. It was stalled for three years, by which time the YMCA’s option-to-buy agreement with the church organization had expired.

According to executive director Tom Porter, the YMCA has no building plans at present. He said he will seek community involvement in planning a new facility.
