Workers dressed in protective clothing removed several dozen barrels of nitric and sulfuric acid from a Tulare County warehouse to begin cleanup at the state’s top-ranked hazardous waste site. Flex Multilayer Inc. was No. 1 on the state “superfund” list issued last month. Workers removed 80 drums of chemicals from a warehouse in Dinuba once occupied by the company, a manufacturer of circuit boards and other electronic parts. Almost 200 more barrels containing alkalis, cyanides and toxic metals dissolved in liquids will be removed over the next two weeks. The estimated $20,000 cost of removing the barrels and transporting them to a licensed disposal facility will by covered by a company escrow account, said Gerald White, regional enforcement chief for the state Health Services Department.
