Renovation of the 99-year-old Statue of Liberty is one-third complete, but its fund-raising foundation has collected only slightly more than half the money needed to finish the jobs on Liberty and Ellis islands, the Interior Department announced. Officials estimate it will cost $230 million to strengthen and modernize the statue in time for a July 4, 1986, centennial celebration and to restore Ellis Island, where immigrants for decades first touched American soil.
