All in All, L. A. Cost of Living Compares Well
A comparative price survey indicates that the cost of living in Los Angeles County compares favorably with other major metropolitan areas around the nation and other areas of California.
Conducted by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce in association with the American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Assn., the survey shows that the high housing costs in Los Angeles are offset by below-average costs for grocery items and utilities.
The cost-of-living index used did not measure price changes but measured relative price levels for consumer goods and services in 240 cities and metropolitan areas throughout the country.
Based on a national average index of 100 for all participating areas, the third-quarter 1984 index for Los Angeles was 113.8, while the index for San Diego was 117.7, Anaheim was 121.9, and San Francisco was 124.8. Among major metropolitan areas throughout the country, Phoenix recorded an index of 104.5; Baltimore, 106.6; New York, 140.4, and Houston, 109.2.
