UCI’s Tennis Team Loses to Texas, 5-4

The UC Irvine men’s tennis team, ranked 14th, lost for the first time this year, 5-4, to the University of Texas in the second round of the Arizona State Invitational collegiate men’s tennis tournament Saturday at Tempe.

The Anteaters (8-1) won only two singles matches. In No. 1 singles, Irvine’s Bruce Man Song Hing defeated Tom Fontana, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. In No. 3 singles, Steve Aniston defeated Doug Pielet of Texas, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

No. 12-ranked Texas (7-1) had a 4-2 lead going into the doubles matches, but Irvine picked up two points by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The deciding match, No. 1 doubles, was won by Texas in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. In that match, Royce Deppe and Charles Beckman defeated Man Song Hing and Ken Derr.

Irvine plays host Arizona State (5-1) today.

In other tournament action Saturday, the Sun Devils beat Illinois, 7-2.
