The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service announced that 1,486 aliens heading into the San Joaquin Valley were apprehended in periodic highway checks on Interstate 5 between Feb. 1 and Feb. 10. That represented a 28% increase over the number apprehended during a similar operation at the same time last year.
