ISLAND PARK, N.Y. —
The Long Island Lighting Co. was charged Tuesday with negligence in the spill of an estimated 400,000 gallons of diesel oil from an electric power plant into a creek behind the plant.
The Nassau County fire marshal charged the utility with delaying the reporting of the spill for nearly two hours Sunday, allowing the discharge of a flammable fluid and improper maintenance of a dike that was supposed to contain the oil. The charges are misdemeanors, each of them punishable by a fine of up to $5,000.
