The City Council has given itself a 39% raise that becomes effective in May, 1986, in accordance with state legislation allowing the increases.

The council members will receive $538.70 a month. The council received its last raise in 1984, a 5% increase to $387 a month.

Councilman Al Natividad said the council unanimously approved the salary increase last week because the members, who are elected at large, felt their work had “increased dramatically in amount and complexity.” A state law that became effective Jan. 1 allows city councils to increase their pay according to the size of the city’s population.
