Lake Forest : Storm Damage Spells End for Ancient Oak

Share

Despite the efforts of preservationists, county officials say a 700-year-old oak that was partially uprooted two weeks ago during a storm will have to be removed because of danger to children climbing its branches.

The massive tree on Trabuco Road is on county land leased to the Lake Forest Equestrian Center. If someone were hurt, the county would be liable, said Hal Krizan, director of the Department of Harbors, Beaches and Parks.

Because some thought the tree had historical significance, Krizan said, a slice of it will be preserved and displayed on a monument either where it stood or at nearby Heritage Hill.

Preservationists suggested putting a fence around the tree’s base, but that would be impractical, Krizan said.

“I’m so disappointed,” said Ferne Cohen, president of the Sea and Sage Chapter of the Audubon Society. “I don’t understand why they would want to take it down when it’s living and there were alternatives.”

After the tree is felled, equestrian center operators plan to originate a horse trail on the spot, Krizan said.

Wood from the tree, which is valued in the thousands of dollars, will be given to those contracted to cut it down, Krizan said.
