Eddie Gallagher, 35, serving a 20-year sentence for the 1976 kidnaping of Dutch industrialist Tiede Herrema, suspended a hunger strike on the 39th day Friday to allow talks to go ahead on his demands for improved prison conditions, his lawyers said.

Earlier, the Justice Department, which has not yet said whether it will agree to such talks, said that Gallagher’s life was in no immediate danger from his hunger strike, but that he could suffer irreversible damage if he did not end the fast very soon. Gallagher is a member of a splinter group of the Irish Republican Army.
