Arizona Moves Into a First-Place Tie
Pete Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half Monday night, sparking Arizona to a 63-60 victory over Washington State that moved the Wildcats into a first-place tie with USC in the Pacific 10 Conference standings.
With Arizona leading, 61-60, the Cougars had a chance to take the lead, but Mark Babich missed a 15-foot jump shot with 10 seconds remaining. Eddie Smith was fouled with three seconds left and made both free throws.
Smith led the Wildcats (19-6, 10-3) with 19 points.
Washington State (11-13, 3-11) was paced by Joe Wallace’s 18 points and 14 by Keith Morrison.
The Cougars held a 35-27 lead at halftime behind Wallace’s 11 points.
Arizona shot 37% in the first half as Williams played only nine minutes because of foul trouble.
But the Wildcats came back to shoot 69% in the second half.
