Fluor Corp.’s annual meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m., March 12, at its Irvine headquarters. The engineering and construction company had earlier considered holding the meeting in Houston, Texas, but decided against it, company officials said.

Fluor Corp.’s Daniel International Corp. construction subsidiary has been awarded two contracts from the paper industry. Tuesday, Fluor officials said Daniel recently received a $13 million contract to oversee the rebuilding of two newsprint paper-making machines for the Augusta Newsprint Co. in Augusta, Ga.

The Hammermill Paper Co. of Erie, Pa. named Daniel construction manager for a $175 million expansion project at its Selma, Ala. plant. The expansion includes a paper machine, finishing area, warehouse and shipping facilities at the plant, which produces uncoated fine papers such as bond and offset printing grades. Fluor officials declined to say what the contract was worth to Daniel, but said it was “a substantial amount.”

The Irvine Co. tops the list of the 10 largest property owners in Orange County, County Treasurer-Tax Collector Robert L. Citron said last week. The company’s annual tax assessment is $51.1 million, although the company is protesting $31.8 million of the total bill.

Even if the Irvine Co. is successful in its appeal, it will remain the county’s largest taxpayer, owing $19.3 million. The other nine companies are:

Pacific Telephone (now Pacific Bell), which will pay $13.5 million, an increase of nearly $395,000 from last year’s bill; Southern California Edison, owing $11.6 million, up about $1.5 million; Rockwell International, Hughes Aircraft, General Telephone, Union Oil, Walt Disney Productions, Mission Viejo Co. and McDonnell Douglas. Each of the latter seven companies is being billed less than $5 million, according to Citron.

The total tax bill for the top 10 taxpayers--including the disputed Irvine Co. billing, amounts to $99 million, which Citron said is the highest in the last five years.
