Los Angeles police raided 16 homes in an anti-gang, anti-drug sweep that resulted in eight arrests and the confiscation of 11 guns and about 20 grams of “rock” cocaine estimated to be worth $2,000 on the street. Most of the raids occurred in a three-square-mile area of Southwest Los Angeles. The raids came in response to numerous complaints by citizens about violence in their neighborhoods, which had 18 murders last year, according to Lt. Sam Dacus, head of the Police Department’s anti-gang detail in the southern part of the city. About 100 officers, including members of the Inglewood Police Department and the district attorney’s office, participated in the raids. One of those arrested, Keith Bursey, 22, of Los Angeles, is suspected in a Dec. 18 gang-related murder in the Hyde Park area, Dacus said.
